Christopher O’Rourke RIP
Today is a very sad day, and I, on behalf of Mona and her family, would like to thank you all for coming here today, to join with us in celebrating the life of our beloved Christy. Christy, or Salty as he was known to his old pals, many of whom are here today, was a big personality, with many sides to his character. I know many of you will remember Christy for his great sense of humour and irrepressible sense of fun. Christy left many happy and funny memories.
Another side to Christy was his care, responsibility, and deep love for his beloved wife Mona, and his daughters, their husbands, partners and children.
Christy had many friends over his lifetime, including work colleagues, neighbours, even the nurses in the hospital who came to know and love Christy, and whom he promised to marry on a daily basis, they, like his brothers and sisters and their families, Mona’s family, his cousins and neighbours past and present, and all those whose lives he touched will be very, very sad today.
For many years during his illness, Christy kept the best side out, and maintained his sense of humour, his dignity and displayed a courage where many would have fallen. The loss of his beloved Geraldine was a devastating blow to Christy, Mona and all the family, and his ability to soldier on is an example to all.
Christy loved his model soldiers, many he made himself, he loved music, and his vast collection of books was one of his many interests and pastimes. Christy loved to read of adventure and heroism, but we know that Christy was the greatest hero of them all.
I want to say a special word of thanks to all those marvellous people who devoted their time and love to Christy when his need was most, they know who they are!
A special thank you to his old Pal, Father Niall, who came home when Christy needed him.
Thanks to Dr. Thornton and the staff of the Mater Hospital, and the Palliative Nurses from Harolds Cross and also his GP, Dr. Ger O’Flaherty from the Coombe Health Centre.
We hope Christy has found Peace, and is united with his loved ones who have gone before him. We will remember Christy, and be ever grateful for the privilege of having Christy in our lives.
God bless Christy and his Family.
Thank You,
Narrated at Christy’s funeral Mass by his brother Billy at the request of Mona, Pauline and the family. 7th Dec 09.
