New Generation
We have a lively Children’s Liturgy Group in both communities. The leaders are committed to laying the foundations of our Christian Faith and the children learn through teaching, listening to the Word of God in language they understand, along with the use of artwork reinforcing the written word. The leaders also guide them in their preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Ther are approximately thirty young people attending the Liturgy Groups and all children are very welcome to attend.
St. George’s Group meet during the 8.45am Mass and St. Wilfrid’s during the 10.30am Mass on Sunday mornings during term-time.
Children’s Liturgy Groups’ Combined Sponsored Event at Michelham Priory, October 2011
Last Saturday saw over seventy St. George’s and St. Wilfrid’s parishioners uniting to raise money for Sky Murray, with many more unable to attend but sponsoring the event. Skye, who is a member of St. George’s Liturgy group, was unfortuntely diagnosed with Wilms Tumour (a childhood cancer) earlier this year and has since been undergoing a variety of medical treatments including regular chemotherapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Kent. A great success, the day raised several hundred pounds (exact total to be confirmed next week after all sponsorship is collected) for Skye and her family to put towards the never ending additional costs, such as travel, that are incurred by a family with an already heavy financial burden to bear. Further, the sense of unity for our parishes was much welcomed by all involved. We hope to organise similar afternoons in the future and welcome suggestions or assistance to secure a suitable location.
A big ‘Thank you’ to Michelham Priory, who provided the perfect venue for young to old. Many children took part in a Scavenger Hyunt around the Priory as well as several games on the field allocated to the event. Other parishioners had enjoyable walks around the grounds and took full advantage of the opportunity to have refreshments in the Priory’s lovely coffee shop.
Thanks also to Bernadette, who volunteers at the Priory and helped organise access; the Knights of St. Columba for their expert stewardship of car parking and scavenger hunts; both St. George’s and St. Wilfrid’s Liturgy Groups for organising the fun and games, particularly Emily Wake for her excellent face painting, and everyone who supported the day both attending and sponsoring.
