The Road to the Holy Land
The following is an excellent account contained in a letter sent by Captain Thomas Henry Symmonds, Royal Engineeers, who during the war was with the 8th Army under Field Marshal Montgomery. At the time he was in Jersualem during World War II, at the time when his wife had given birth to twins. One of those twins is now a member of St. George’s Community in Polegate and we are very grateful for her kindness in allowing us to publish the letter on the Web. Thank you.
A message from the contributor:
I forgot to mention in my email, though I think I did say at the meeting on Saturday, that the article my father wrote was in a letter to my mother in Ireland who had given birth to twin daughters, my sister and myself in 1941. It is personal to her, therefore, in parts. She died aged 99 in 2007 and we found the account among her belongings. I know she would be happy for me to share his account of his visit with parishoners.
Best wishes, Anne
